The Family Tree: The Roots - Radical Face

02/13/2019

Radical Face is one of the projects of Ben Cooper, also involved in Electric President, The Clone Project, Iron Orchestra, and Mother's Basement, to name a few. Cooper decided to be a musician at age 19 after writing two books, not backing up his files, and smashing his computer when it crashed. The Family Tree is a series of albums, together creating a long intricate story with intertwined characters and plots. It is both made up and inspired by his life. For now, there are 4 albums and few EP's for The Family Tree. The Roots is the first in the series. It has 11 tracks and is about 45 minutes. The genre on google is listed as rock but it's far more folk. I would say yeah it's folk rock but definitely more on the side on folk. The whole album, like Cooper's other projects, evokes a very nostalgic feel. I don't know what it is, but he knows exactly how to make listeners feel something. My favorite track is Mountains. It tells a story of a boy whose mother died of scarlet fever three years before and the last time his family spends the holidays together before his brother is shot in the service. There's some other stuff too because it's part of the big story but it's really good no kidding. This was the first folk thing I listened to and liked and it got me into a lot of other bands so I would honestly recommend it to anyone.
