Trench - Twenty One Pilots

10/26/2018

Trench is Twenty One Pilots' 5th and newest record. This has been long awaited, 2015 was when their last album, Blurryface, dropped; and they had a year long "hiatus" of no social media presence. This review might be a little biased, not only because I've been a fan for a few years, but I've also seen them live twice, once for the Emotional Roadshow tour, and now the Bandito tour, for Trench. First off, these two guys know how to put on a show. They bring so much energy to the place that it resonates in you long after you leave. Trench is different from their previous albums in the sense that most are written more as songs rather than poems. There are more chorus and verse repeats than in the other albums. I personally like the more poetic ones off of their self titled album, for example. My favorite track of of Trench has to probably be Neon Gravestones. It's almost entirely a rap with a little bit of a chorus. The piano at the beginning really gives the entire song rhythm throughout. The song is about how in our society, suicide is almost glorified. It includes the lead singer Tyler's inner conflict about how easy it would be to just off himself, for lack of better words.

"I could give up, and boost up my reputation
I could go out with a bang
They would know my name
They would host and post a celebration.."

It's a really emotional song because this has been a conflict even off of Tyler's first album, No Phun Intended, he wrote when he was 17. The ending verse is about how life is something to be celebrated rather than a task you have to do. I think this is a topic that's hard to talk about and Twenty One Pilots completely blew it out of the water with what they were trying to convey. While there are heavy songs like this though, there are also lighter ones like Smithereens, written for Tyler's wife Jenna. I think there's at least one song that everyone would like on this record because it's so diverse with music styles and subject matter. Overall, Trench is a really good album and I would recommend it to anyone looking for something different yet meaningful.
